Working from Home?
Working from home lately and feel unorganized? Does it feel like you do not have your own space to concentrate and focus on your tasks? This is why I'm loving the new trend of “pocket offices!” Many times, new construction home builders are now building homes with these small spaces in mind; with you in mind. I have personally designed and shown many homes that have pocket offices; although many consumers do not know what to do with the space. Sometimes they find it to be too small or out of place. Sometimes they can’t envision how to make it a comfortable place to spread out and accomplish what needs to be done in an office. Other times, they think they would rather use the space for something else and just work at the kitchen counter. I’m here to tell you we as a society cannot be in a focus driven mind set sitting at the kitchen counter while life is happening around us. We need to have quite spaces, our own little serenity where we can accomplish our tasks quicker. I feel as if I have been able to get more done in less hours due to being well organized and efficient at home. So I’m here to share with you a few ideas on how to make a home office look tidy yet functional. For small spaces where you can actually get away from the hustle and bustle of your family; add barn door or simply a quiet corner in your bedroom will work. It is absolutely ok if you only have a room the size of the closet; you can work with that. Add organizational bins on the wall for files and loose papers as well as cork boards or dry erase boards to keep the items that are most important in front of you at all times. You can add a small plant for pops of green; that makes it feel cozy. Make sure to have all your necessities there that makes it feel like the office space you are used to. Keep it simple so clutter does not overwhelm you. Have small file folders stacked between book ends to keep a clean look but everything you need at your fingertips. Lastly, use a cute decorative vase for your pens on one corner of the desk. Small wood desks with matte black metal legs are totally “it” thing right now and there are so many styles to choose from. Some with drawers and some without; that’s up to you. I prefer clean lines but need storage, so I chose one with 3 drawers across the front but no file cabinets. Then chose a sleek chair. Something comfortable but doesn’t take up a lot space. Generally, need to stay away from something arms on it to keep that clean look. A small table lamp next to your vase of pens will help with light especially if you don’t have any natural light in your workspace. There are some super cute table lamps as shown in the photo available at Target right now. Personalize the space. Add a few photos that bring you warmth and comfort. Share with me your ideas. I would love to see what you come up with!
I must say, it pains me to see all these empty parking lots and vacant buildings. What will become of our cities and commercial property land development? With so many corporations now finding it easier than ever to have their employees work remotely who knows what the future holds but for whenever that time may come at least for now you an be efficient from the comfort of your own home.
